Putting a high priority on ergonomics will make working less of a pain.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t make your employment responsibilities any easier. Instead, it focuses on creating an individualized physical environment that reduces strain on your body. When you sit in one place for eight hours or more the way you sit makes a difference. Take a moment to sit down in your office and ask yourself the following questions.
Ergonomic Assessment Checklist
Chair
- When you sit, do your feet lie flat on the floor with your knees level with your hips?
- Does it support your lower back?
- Are the armrests located at a normal resting position for your elbows (not lifting shoulders or slouching to reach them)?
Mouse and Keyboard
- When typing are your wrists straight?
- Are the keyboard and mouse level with or below your elbows?
- Are your elbows near your main body (as opposed to extended forward to reach your mouse and keyboard)?
Monitor
- Is the monitor at eye level?
- Can you keep your head straight to look at your monitor (as opposed to looking left or right or tilting your head up or down to view the screen)?
- Is the monitor at least 20″ – 25″ from your face?
If you answered no to any of these questions then you can improve the ergonomics in your office. And while you are taking the time to customize it to your body’s proportions, also take the time to make the space reflect your personality. The neutral space can easily be customized by bringing in your favorite color, patterns, or art.

Modern design juxtaposes well with nature. Bring in some flowers, ferns, furs, and other natural materials to soften and customize the look.
